White Horse Tavern
White Horse Tavern Review
America's oldest tavern was originally built in 1652 as a two-room, two-story residence but was converted to a tavern in 1673 by William Mayes, Sr., father of a notorious pirate. It served as a meeting place of the Colony's General Assembly, Criminal Court, and City Council. Now a fine-dining restaurant, the White Horse's gambrel roof, low dark-beam ceilings, cavernous fireplace, and uneven plank floors convey Newport's Colonial charm.
