The Blithewold Mansion and Arboretum is somewhat overlooked compared with the many lavish compounds in Newport, but this 33-acre estate merits a visit. You can tour the 45-room mansion, which dates to 1908 and is pattered after a 17th-century English manor—its contents include a mix of period antiques and reproduction pieces. But the real prize here are the gardens, trees, and dramatic 10-acre lawn fringing Narragansett Bay. There are more than 3,000 shrubs and trees, including the largest giant sequoia on the East Coast (it's nearly 100 feet tall).
