The elegant redbrick Hotel Viking, built in 1926, stands at the north end of Bellevue Avenue. The wood paneling and chandeliers evoke the hotel's sophisticated history. The stately rooms, adorned with reproduction Colonial furniture and appointments, resemble the homes of Colonial merchant seamen. Bathrooms are done in marble and have "rain" showerheads. One Bellevue Restaurant serves fresh seafood and afternoon tea service; Top of the Viking, a rooftop bar, is open in summer; the outstanding Spa Terre provides Thai and Indonesian massage and body treatments. Pros: lovely location on hilltop, exceptional spa facilities. Cons: despite many renovations it still feels a bit dark and somber.
