Busy, sometime noisy, but always excellent, this restaurant serves as many as 15 kinds of superbly fresh wood-grilled fish, including grilled lobster and plenty of local species: monkfish, bluefish, halibut, tautog. Similar dishes are available in the more formal dining room upstairs at UpScales, open late May through early September.

We always count on Scales and Shells for a good Newport supper. I tried the monkfish with garlic and oil, which was delicious. It's known as "poor man's lobster" because of its similar taste and texture. My husband always enjoys the toro tuna. Food here is cooked well and the atmosphere is fun, because you are able to watch the chefs as they cook the dishes. Go early, though, because it gets very crowded.
