The design of this stately painted-brick house is attributed to the architect responsible for the Touro Synagogue and the Redwood Library. A lavish inn with period reproduction furnishings, the 1760 structure was tastefully doubled in size in the mid-1990s. The rooms in the main house overlook the courtyard, which has a fountain, or across the street to the harbor; all rooms have working fireplaces, iPod-docking stations, and bathrooms with Jacuzzis. Breakfast is served in a domed ceiling dining room. The owners also run the lovely Hilltop Inn, at the foot of Bellevue Avenue, a handsome Arts and Crafts house with similarly elegant rooms. Pros: steps from many restaurants and shops, highly professional service, working fireplaces in each room. Cons: Thames Street abounds with tourists in summer.
