Midway between Newport and Providence—each a 30-minute drive—patriotic Bristol sits on a 10-square-mile peninsula between Narragansett Bay on its west and Mount Hope Bay on its east. The main thoroughfare through the town’s charming business district, Hope Street, is painted with a red-white-and-blue center stripe in honor of the town’s annual 4th of July Celebration dating back to 1785, making it the oldest continuous celebration of its kind in the United States. Bristol was once a boatbuilding center; the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company built five consecutive America's Cup Defenders between 1893 and 1920. The southern end of the East Bay Bike Path lies at Independence Park. The bike path crosses the access road for Colt State Park, a great spot for picnics and kite flying.
