To explore the island's lovely West Side, head west from New Harbor on West Side Road; after the Island Cemetery, you'll pass the converted West Side Baptist Church and a horse farm. To reach the tranquil west shore, turn right on Grace's Cove Road, Dorie's Cove Road, or Cooneymus Beach Road, dirt roads that dead-end in small coves with sunset ocean views. The road jogs left and turns into Cooneymus Road, which overlooks Rodman's Hollow; ¼ mile further, it intersects with Lakeside Drive. Turn right to encounter Painted Rock, a knee-high boulder that islanders paint with messages that memorialize birthdays, weddings, and other life-changing events. A public footpath below Painted Rock descends through dense, overgrown vegetation to a rocky beach. From there it's just a few hundred yards to a secluded cove where sea stars congregate.
