Hamanassett Review

Innkeepers Ashley and Glenn Mon fill their hilltop country house with Southern hospitality and British style: breakfast by candlelight, evening cordials served on the Empire sideboard, a solarium with wicker hampers perfect for impromptu picnics. The Mons, who formerly owned a New Orleans B&B, furnished the elegant 1856 Federal-style home with Ashley's family antiques. But the place isn't at all fussy—there are comfy chairs and sofas on which you can put your feet up. The Windsor Room has a 10-foot-tall bed from a Louisiana plantation. All rooms have English linens and toiletries and feather beds. The carriage house, with a fenced-in yard, welcomes children and pets.

A trip to the Philadelphia area for my husband’s 35th high school reunion landed us at the Hamanassett B&B for a week. With lots of relatives and friends in the area, we wanted to be close, but not TOO close, to all the action and Chester Heights turned out to be the perfect locale; only a short 15 minute drive from downtown Media. The Inn Keepers were easy to deal with both on the phone and via email; going out of their way to make sure we knew how to find the place in the dark of the night since we’d be arriving well after their normal check-in time. The directions were perfect and lead us right down a gravel path to the front door of our private, two-story cottage on the Hamanassett property, of which there are two. Porch light on, key in the door…just like they said it would be! The cozy two bedroom cottage was outfitted perfectly with a charming front sitting room, well-stocked kitchen, and spacious dining room where I setup my computer to work remotely for the week via their free Wi-Fi service. We ended up sleeping downstairs in the comfortable king bed outfitted with upgraded linens, but had to shower upstairs, as there was only a small powder room on the first floor. Not a deal-breaker, but my husband, who is quite tall, had to duck to make it up the old, narrow stairwell. We didn’t see much of the Inn Keepers since we were “vacation property” not “bed & breakfast” renters, which was fine by us. Word to the wise, though, stop at the Acme on your way in and buy some toilet paper, because that’s one amenity that does not come with the “vacation property” rental. Only 1 small roll installed in each bathroom dispenser and no back-stock (by design)! And while you’re there, grab a few apples for the resident horses, they’re your neighbors, after all!
