Reading Terminal Market
Reading Terminal Market Review
The market is nothing short of a historic treasure, and a food heaven to Philadelphians and visitors alike. One floor beneath the former Reading Railroad's 1891 train shed, the sprawling market has more than 75 food stalls and other shops, selling items from hooked rugs and handmade jewelry to South American and African crafts. Here, amid the local color, you can sample Bassett's ice cream, Philadelphia's best; down a cheesesteak, a hoagie, a bowl of snapper soup, or a soft pretzel; or nibble Greek, Mexican, Thai, and Indian specialties. From Wednesday through Saturday the Amish from Lancaster County cart in their goodies, including Lebanon bologna, shoofly pie, and scrapple. Many stalls have their own counters with seating; there's also a central eating area. An open kitchen offers regular demonstrations by some of the region's top chefs. The entire building is a National Historic Landmark, and the train shed is a National Engineering Landmark.

Mostly food stalls. A variety as mentioned by others. Very crowded with lines and waits for a seat on Saturday afternoon. A few merchandise shops. Good prices on fresh vegetables. Worth a stop when touring downtown.

Absolutely a must for lunch in the city...or breakfast! I love the retro feel of Pearl's Oyster Bar, the hoagies at Salumeria, the whoopie pies from the Amish ladies at the bakery at the far end, the wonderful cheeses and meats and veg...Good for getting a meal to eat in your hotel, as well!

An absolute must! Historic old food market with plenty of great spots for food. Best food options: roast pork with greens and sharp provolone at DiNics, cheesesteaks at Rick's, Italian hoagies at Salumeria, soft pretzels at Fishers, ice cream at Bassett's, Italian pastry at Termini, cookies at Famous 4th Street, anything at the Amish food stalls. Tends to wind down after lunch time, so this meal is the best time to go. Avoid on Sundays, as many places are closed that day.
