Late Night Eats
Greasy spoons abound in Philly. Try one of these late-night haunts after a night of carousing.
South Street
Ishkabibble's. If you don't mind making your way through the milling crowds up and down the street, head to South Street in Center City East for cheese fries and a chicken cheesesteak at Ishkabibble's, which is open until 2 am Friday and Saturday. 337 South St., South Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19147. 215/923-4337.
Lorenzo's. The primo late-night haunt for the pizza-minded remains Lorenzo's, which stays open until 3 am or later every night but Sunday. Expect long, rowdy lines, and basic slices to go—they don't do toppings. They have a small dining area in the back, but you're much better off enjoying your slice on the street, or going south on 3rd Street and sitting at one of the little benches at Bainbridge Street. 305 South St., South Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19147. 215/627-4110. www.lorenzoandsons.com/.
South Philadelphia
Pat's King of Steaks. For a regular cheesesteak 24/7, Pat's King of Steaks hits the spot; get the cheese fries to up to grease quotient. Expect a line of people, but the fast service usually makes up for it. 1237 E. Passyunk Ave., South Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, 19147. 215/468-1546. www.patskingofsteaks.com.
The Melrose Diner. Generous portions of breakfast foods, including eggs, potatoes, and scrapple are available till late at this South Philly mainstay. 1501 Snyder Ave., South Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, 19145. 215/467-6644.
Northern Liberties
Silk City. You can grab meatloaf or cornmeal-crusted tofu at Silk City until 2 am every night. During the warmer months you can take advantage of their wondrous beer garden to the side of the main building. 435 Spring Garden St., Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, PA, 19123. 215/592-8838. www.silkcityphilly.com.
Darling's. If you're looking for a traditional late-night haunt, try Darling's, one of the many establishments that recently sprouted around the Piazza across from Liberties Walk. There you can find the usual assortment of eggs, burgers, and salads, with a few more enterprising options such as peanut-butter pancakes with Nutella and their signature cheesecake until 5 am on weekends. 1001 N. 2nd St., Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, PA, 19123. 215/239-5775. www.darlingsdiner.com.
