Where to Refuel Around Town
For those times when all you want is a quick bite—and you just can't face another cheesesteak or slice of pizza—consider these alternatives.
DiBruno Bros.: This uptown outpost of the original Italian Market location is a one-stop gourmet shop where office workers, students, and ladies who lunch rub elbows midday to choose from the eat-in or take-out options. It's well-placed for a picnic, with Rittenhouse Square just a few blocks away.
Downstairs at the Bellevue: This centrally located, upscale food court beneath the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue at Broad and Walnut streets features some local vendors, such as 12th Street Cantina and Rocco's Italian Hoagies.
Italian Market: At 9th and Christian are a few lunch spots featuring hot pork and tripe sandwiches in addition to many varieties of hoagies. If you prefer fish, Anastasio's Fish Market at 9th and Washington also serves lunch and dinner.
Marathon Grill: In eight (and counting) locations around the city, this local chain serves an enormous selection of comfort foods, much of which is customizable (wraps, sandwiches, salads). It's a great place to stop in for a quick, cheap lunch—or a smoothie to go.
Market at Comcast Center: The newest, tallest skyscaper in Philadelphia hides its sweet spot underground at the Market at Comcast Center, the best grab-a-bite scenario this side of Reading Terminal Market. Choose from sandwiches and salads from DiBruno Bros., dumplings by Susanno Foo, and sushi by Tokyo Express.
Street Vendors: A number of lunch carts in Center City offer ethnic food, including Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and Italian, as well as the more standard hot dogs, hamburgers, and fresh fruit. In University City the block between 37th and 38th on Sansom Street has various ethnic vendors catering to Penn students.
