A shelf of staff picks is the first thing you see at the laid-back Doylestown Bookshop, which also has a sizeable magazine selection in its 6,000 square-foot store. Grab a drink from the refrigerator in the cafe section and settle in.
The crowded shelves at Farley's Bookshop, a New Hope institution, hold plenty of choices, including books about the region.
Peddler's Village began in the early 1960s, when the late Earl Jamison bought a 6-acre chicken farm, moved local 18th-century houses to the site, and opened a collection of specialty shops and restaurants. The 70 shops in the village peddle books, toys, clothing, jewelry, candles, cookware and housewares, crafts and other items. The Grand Carousel, a restored 1922 merry-go-round, still works, and Giggleberry Fair offers a bonanza of games for its loud little visitors. Crowd-drawing seasonal events include May's Strawberry Festival and September's Scarecrow Festival.
For chocolate, including yummy truffles, turtles, and chocolate-covered pretzels, head a little outside the main business district to the delectable Pierre's Chocolates.
Near Peddler's Village, Rice's Market is an open-air market open every Tuesday and Saturday morning with bargains on new and used items, including clothing, jewelry, handbags, toys, produce, meats, and baked goods. There are some antiques and collectibles, too. It's generally open from 7 am to 1 pm.
This shop, quirky in comparison to others in New Hope, sells spicy sauces, snacks, and "hot" chocolate year-round. Among its hottest of the hot peppers are ghost peppers and scorpion peppers.
You can find art glass and jewelry at Topeo. A sister store, Topeo South, located at 15 North Main Street, offers art pottery, garden art, and Judaica as well.
