The lodgings we list are the cream of the crop in each price category. We always list the facilities that are available, but we don't specify whether they cost extra; when pricing accommodations, always ask what's included and what costs extra. Properties are assigned price categories based on a standard double room in high season (excluding holidays), and excluding tax and service charges. Portland room tax: 12.5%. Elsewhere in Oregon: ranges from 6 to 10%.
An alternative to staying in a hotel is to spread out a bit and relax in a vacation rental. There are plenty of choices, particularly along the Oregon Coast, near Mt. Hood, and in Central Oregon resort areas near Bend. Renting an apartment or a house is an especially attractive idea for long-term visitors or large groups and families.

Oregon is renowned for its range of bed-and-breakfast options, which are found everywhere from busy urban areas to casual country farms and windswept coastal retreats. Many bed-and-breakfasts in Oregon provide full gourmet breakfasts, and some have kitchens that guests can use. Other popular amenities to ask about are fireplaces, jetted bathtubs, outdoor hot tubs, and proximity to area activities.

Oregon has excellent state-run campgrounds. Half accept advance camping reservations, and the others are first come, first served. Campgrounds range from primitive tent sites to parks with yurts, cabins, and full hookups. Sites are located in and around Oregon's more spectacular natural sites, be it on the coast, the Cascade Range, or near the wine country. Privately operated campgrounds sometimes have extra amenities such as laundry rooms and swimming pools. For more information, contact the state or county tourism department.
