By Train in Portland

Amtrak serves Union Station. The Coast Starlight operates daily between Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles. The Empire Builder travels between Portland and Chicago via Spokane and Minneapolis. The Cascades, with modern European train cars, operates daily between Eugene, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C.

Metropolitan Area Express, or MAX, links the eastern and western Portland suburbs with downtown, Washington Park and the Oregon Zoo, the Lloyd Center district, the Convention Center, and the Rose Quarter. From downtown, trains operate daily 5:30 AM-1 AM, with a fare of $1.65 for travel through one or two zones, $1.95 for three zones, and $4 for an unlimited all-day ticket. A seven-day visitor pass is also available for $19. Trains run about every 10 minutes Monday-Saturday and every 15 minutes on Sunday and holidays.
