Chef and cookbook author Lisa Schroeder dedicates her home-style, made-with-love approach to food to the comforting foods prepared by mothers everywhere. Clearly, the theme resonates, as evidenced by the long waits on weekends, and even some weekday mornings for breakfast, which is arguably the best time of the day to sample Schroeder's hearty cooking; try the wild salmon hash with leeks or the French toast with a crunchy corn-flake crust. Highlights at lunch and dinner
include macaroni and cheese with daily changing ingredients, meat loaf and gravy, and slow-stewed chicken and dumplings. For vegetarians there's an array of salads and a flavorful veggie-and-tofu stir-fry. The high ceilings in the well-lit dining room lend an air of spaciousness, but the tables are a bit close together; dine outside on the sidewalk if the weather permits. The Velvet Lounge bar is popular for late-night noshing and sipping. Reservations are recommended on weekends.
