Fodor's Review

This beautiful animal park in the West Hills, famous for its Asian elephants, is undergoing a two-decade-long series of major improvements and expansions to make the zoo more sustainable and provide more stimulating spaces, education and conservation opportunities, as well as improved guest amenities and event spaces. The new Condors of the Columbia habitat opened in 2014, and includes a deep pool for condor bathing, a 30-foot aviary, and an elevated viewing area to see

the condors in flight. A new Elephant Lands area is slated to debut in 2015, and will feature a variety of elements like feeding stations, mud wallows, varied terrain, and deep pools to keep the elephants active, as well as one of the world's largest indoor elephant facilities. A state-of-the-art Zoo Education Center, Polar Bear Habitat, Primate Habitat, and Rhino Habitat are planned for the next few years. Because the upgrades are happening in stages, the zoo is still fully functional. Major draws include an African Savanna with rhinos, hippos, zebras, and giraffes. Steller Cove, a state-of-the-art aquatic exhibit, has Steller sea lions and a family of sea otters. Other exhibits include polar bears, chimpanzees, a penguinarium, and habitats for beavers, otters, waterfowl, and reptiles native to the west side of the Cascade Range. In summer a narrow-gauge train operates from the zoo, chugging along a track that was redesigned and lengthened in 2014, past several animal exhibits and through the woods to a station near the International Rose Test Garden and the Japanese Garden. Summer concerts, often featuring nationally known pop stars, take place about once a week at the zoo in July and August. Take the MAX light rail to the Washington Park station.
