Southeast

Bounded on the west by the Willamette River and on the north by Burnside Avenue, the city’s Southeast quadrant comprises several of Portland’s hottest and hippest neighborhoods. Packed with shade trees, Craftsman-style houses, and backyard chicken coops, this neighborhood is industrial close in (the river to 7th)—an increasingly trendy food and retail district known as the Central Eastside, which has also lately blossomed with top-quality artisanal distilleries and urban wineries—and middle- to upper-middle-class residential farther out (8th to 82nd). You’ll encounter vibrant pockets of foodie-driven restaurants—as well as bars, coffeehouses, markets, food-cart pods, and boutiques—along east–west running Division, Hawthorne, Belmont, Stark, and Burnside streets, making Southeast a Portland cultural must-see. Other Southeast highlights include the Eastbank Esplanade on the Willamette River (which connects with downtown via several historic bridges), the kid-focused science museum Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), and the beautiful park at Mt. Tabor, an inactive volcanic cinder cone.
