Why We Like It

The Heathman Lodge has got its charm; the wood paneling, rustic decor, and cozy feel make it a great escape for travelers looking for the lodge experience without sacrificing the comforts and amenities of a more traditional hotel.

Fodor's Expert Review

Located across the Columbia River just north of Portland in Vancouver, WA, The Heathman Lodge is everything you’d want out of a cozy lakeside retreat… minus the lake. Constructed primarily out of Douglas Fir, The Heathman Lodge is like escaping to a log cabin in the woods without having to give up any of the modern amenities you’d find in a high-end hotel.

Room

The rooms at The Heathman Lodge definitely lean more towards “rustic” than “luxurious.” Decked out in decor that looks like it belongs more in Santa Fe than in Portland, the no-frills accommodations aren’t winning any style awards - but at least the beds (which feature either Tempur-pedic or pillowtop mattresses) are comfy.

Bathroom

The updated bathrooms, which feature marble finishes and plenty of counter space, are plenty spacious.

Tip If you want to up the luxury factor, make sure to book a Deluxe Suite, which not only has a HUGE shower, but also features a jacuzzi tub big enough for two (perfect for a romantic getaway!).

Lobby

The lobby of The Heathman Hotel is one of the most welcoming places on the property. Adorned with dugout canoes and kayaks, the rustic lodge atmosphere is great for cozying up next to the fire with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Pool

There might not be a lake at The Heathman Lodge… but there’s a pool! Splash in the pool, soak in the hot tub, or relax poolside and soak up some rays in the atrium pool area.

You Should Know The Heathman Lodge is known for being a family-friendly hotel - and the pool especially seems to attract the kiddos. If you’re looking for a more relaxing pool or hot tub experience (without the risk of getting splashed by some kid’s cannonball), consider hitting the atrium area later in the evening, when the little ones have gone to sleep.

Gym

The fitness center at The Heathman Lodge, which features Nautilus equipment, has everything you need to get a good workout in during your stay.

Dining

Inspired by Pacific Northwest ingredients, Hudson’s Bar & Grill specializes in creating farm-to-table comfort dishes that allow local ingredients to take center stage. Standouts on the menu include the Seafood Stew, Columbia River King Salmon, and a to-die-for dessert menu (don’t leave without trying the bread pudding).

Tip Starting at 5pm Tuesday through Saturday, Hudson’s Bar & Grill features live piano music for you to enjoy with your dinner.

Drinking

Hudson’s Bar & Grill has an impressive selection of local wines, which is a great way for visitors to get a feel for what the PNW wine region has to offer.

Getting Around

As mentioned, The Heathman Lodge is located north of Portland in Vancouver, WA and public transportation in the area isn’t the best. If you want the flexibility to explore the city, bring a car (parking is free). If you don’t have a car and need to get to or from the airport, The Heathman Lodge does offer shuttle service to PDX for $15 per ride.

Restaurants

If you want to stay local, try Saigon Restaurant (5-minute drive), an unpretentious Vietnamese restaurant known locally for their killer pho (just don’t expect much for ambiance - the restaurant is more whole-in-the-wall than upscale). If you want to venture into Portland proper, try Tasty N Sons (24-minute drive), a local favorite serving up small plates of American classics (be sure to try the hush puppies).

Bars

Final Draft Taphouse (10-minute drive) is a laid-back spot popular with Vancouver locals with an impressive selection of beers on tap (23, most of which are local favorites). If you want to make the drive into Portland, try Kenton Club (16-minute drive), a dive bar that’s been around since 1947 and hosts local bands Thursday - Saturday nights.
