Recreational Areas

Zumwalt Prairie Preserve. The Nature Conservancy manages these 51 square miles of rolling grasslands, where elk, deer, bears, and bobcats roam. The prairie is also a first-class habitat for several birds of prey, including golden eagles and the regal, migratory Swainson's hawk, which spends its winters in South America. A handful of short, easy trails lead to impressive vistas of the prairie and nearby canyons, and a 10-mile driving tour on gravel roads leads through the south end of the preserve, reconnecting with the highway on its eastern side. The Nature Conservancy office in Enterprise has maps and trail info; the entrance to the preserve is 22 miles north of town off Zumwalt-Buckhorn Road. Office, 906 S.
