  I recently returned to the Crater Lake Lodge with my daughter, on our way back to her second year at the University of British Columbia. It's a perfect location for Crater Lake, right on the rim. Though rebuilt, it retains all the charm of the older park lodges. I think it's worth reserving a room facing the lake, and eating at the dining room. The food is great, service excellent, as was enjoying a drink on the patio overlooking the lake. For what you get, I think it's a bargain.

  A little bit of history

  This is one of those historic places that feels like home the minute you walk into it. Right at the rim of the Crater, even if your room overlooks the parking lot, you still have the most incredible night time views out the window and, just step outside for the great views. Outside in summer, relax on the wooden chairs with a drink overlooking the caldera. The food is surprisingly good, keeping in mind it's the only place to eat within miles.
  
  If you book online, look hard at the date: make sure it is not a year from the time you wish to book. We made that mistake, and were very fortunate that one of the rooms usually held for the park service people was not being used and we were given this choice room. We also lucked out that someone had canceled their dinner reservation that night (also booked way in advance), so we could actually eat a meal.
