Schmidt's
Schmidt's Review
Accordion players serenade and servers are decked out in Bavarian costumes at this popular two-level, beer hall-style restaurant in an 1880 brick building in German Village. Specialties include German pasta and their signature Bahama Mama—a giant bratwurst served with your choice of toppings, such as sauerkraut and mustard. Save room for large, overstuffed cream puffs.

Schmidt's is located in a historic brick building down at the end of a very narrow brick road in an area called German Village. At one time, Columbus' population was about 1/3 German heritage. That may have changed over the years but if so, Schmidt's still stands as a little bit of Germany in Central Ohio.
The brick street ends at a parking area but be warned, at peak times Schmidt's is hugely popular. We're talking tour bus business popular. There's another lot on the next street but don't be surprised to find that one packed as well. And if all that parking is gone, should it surprise you that there is often a line winding outside the door?
Once you get inside past the deli counter and also the case displaying THOSE cream puffs, you'll be hit with having to make a selection from an impressive list ranging from deli sandwiches to German specialties. Or you can do what most of the patrons do and opt for the Autobahn Buffet that will allow you to sample many of the best choices. And of course there's usually a wedding type line for that as well.
So . . . is it worth having to possibly wait or hunt for parking, stand in line out the door to get in, and then again for the buffet? Well in a word, yes. After all, the lines wouldn't be there if the place was awful. But here's the good news. You don't have to stand in line to get one of those delicious cream puffs for desert. You only need to find room for it. Or do what I do and have them box it up to go.
