Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House

Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House Review

Meat loaf, Wiener schnitzel, made-from-scratch gravies, and a hint of grandma's tender loving care are staples at this Central European cafeteria-style restaurant on the near east side. Live polka bands play on Friday and Saturday night.

Frank Sterle is long gone and so is a lot of the Slovenian neighborhood that once bordered this establishment. The once popular Hofbrau House that so long competed with Sterle's is but a memory and a parking lot across the street. The neighborhood is ringed with vacant factories. It has seen better times. So has Sterle's. Once open pretty much everyday, hours have become very limited in recent times. I suggest you call or check their website to avoid pulling on a locked door as I once did. Hopefully, a recent appearance on the Food Channel's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives will cause some people to rediscover the place.

Sad too because Sterle's is that becoming all too rare authentic ethnic cooking that has almost disappeared in the Cleveland food scene. Sterle's is a real throwback to another era. Costumed waitresses wheel carts to your table. They need the carts. The serving portions here are the largest outside of Las Vegas. Meals are enough to well, sink a battleship. But if your appetite (and waistline) can afford more, family style servings are available, even for a party of one. The food is good and hearty. And of course there's a lot of it. It may not be the finest Eastern European cusine you've ever had. But you won't be leaving hungry. Stay away from the fish unless you like it prepared with more breading than there is filet. The byword here is heavy handed and such preparation lends itself much better to the meat dishes.

And don't be surprised when people get up and start dancing if your there on a Friday or Saturday evening. I did say this was a real throwback to another time and era. It's almost worth a look, just for that experience alone.

I grew up in Cleveland in the Croatian & Slovenian area. Frank Sterle's was always a good place to go. We returned their last night after a long time away and were very disappointed with the food quality, service and prices.
We ordered the weinerschnitzel and found it not only very greasy but cooked in old oil. All the burned breading was on our schnitzel. The service was poor and very unfriendly. When we mentioned about the greasy schnitzel we were told that how it is!! There was no customer service. For such a poor meal it was very overpriced!
we will never go back as it was such a bad experience!

Whenever I am in Cleveland with my co-workers Willy and denny, we stop at Sterle's Slovenian Restaurant. Fabulous food, and lots of it; they have the best veal dishes in Cleveland or anywhere.

  • Big 10 campuses

I thought it might be fun to try to visit all of the Big 10 campuses in a year (or thereabouts).

Anyone have any suggestions for not-to-be-missed campus or area sites?

Thanks for your help. Read more
