Cincinnati Restaurants

The Celestial

The Celestial Review

This is the place to go for special occasions, particularly romantic ones. Indulge in caviar and foie gras while enjoying stunning views of Downtown and the river from the top of Mount Adams. Some dishes with a Caribbean twist share the menu with such classic French fare as veal medallions and Dover sole sautéed in lemon butter.

Moved here from Chicago and I have to say I am very disappointed in every dinning experience in Cincinnati! This was no different. The sauces added to the steaks, terrible. My Bearnaise was broke. Ordered the seafood platter and came out frozen! The shrimp and the crab both frozen almost solid. The carpaccio tasted like it had been sitting in the cooler for a life time! The view is good, great even but the service in the main dinning room abysmal!! The service from the wait assistants was better then any time spent with the actual server. Jeff Rubies had more professional staff. The bar staff was great, I plan to go to the bar again! If you plan to go, sit in the bar, order some drinks and see if you want to have dinner. Just know you have been warned!

My filet was tender and cooked to perfection. However, the mushroom demi-glace was so strong and salty (even after scraping it off)it overpowered a nice piece of steak. The baked potato was undercooked and I suspect not "baked." The asparagus was non descript.

We had a wonderful table with a spectacular view of the Cincinnati skyline---even if the windows were streaked and dirty. The restaurant has supposedly been refurbished, however, I thought it still looked a little tired and tattered. The carpeting could have used a good steam clean.

The service started out well, but shortly went downhill when our waiter told one of the gentlemen at our table "if I were married to your wife, I'd kill myself." Yes, she is picky and therefore (politely) asked a lot of questions, but that's part of the service you would expect from any high-end restaurant.Although said in jest, his comment was totally inappropriate and unprofessional. Before dinner the same gentleman ordered a certain brand of scotch the waiter assured him they stocked. We went to the lounge after dinner and subsequently discovered they did not have said brand and the waiter had substitued the scotch without disclosure. Again, a lack of professionalism and courtesy.

There was an automatic 20% gratuity added to our bill with a party of six, that also included liquor and wine.

With all the fine dining restaurants in the Cincinnati area, I doubt very much I or my friends would bother to visit the Celestial again.
