When to Go

The park is open year-round, but North Dakota winters can be brutal—very cold, windy, and snowy. Portions of some roads close during winter months, depending on snowfall. Rangers discontinue their outdoor programs when autumn comes, and they recommend that only experienced hikers do any winter explorations.

Though July and August tend to be the busiest months, the park is rarely crowded. Fewer than 500,000 people visit each year, with the South Unit receiving the greater number of visitors. The best times to see wildlife and hike comfortably are May through October. The park is all but desolate December through February, but it's a beautiful time to see the wildlife—also, winter sunsets can be very vivid as the colors reflect off the snow and ice. The park gets an average of 30 inches of snow per year.
