Getting Oriented
The Little Missouri River winds throughout this western North Dakota park, and plenty of bison, deer, pronghorn, coyote, prairie dogs, and eagles inhabit the land. Climb the peaks and you will get exceptional views of the canyons, caprocks, petrified forest, and other bizarre geological formations that make up the badlands.
- North Unit. Visitors looking to enjoy the great outdoors should be sure to travel along the 14-mile scenic drive and stop at one of the many hiking trailheads along the way. These trailheads give easy access to the backcountry of the North Unit.
- South Unit. Often considered the main unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and adjacent to the famous town of Medora, the South Unit is home to some of the former president's personal artifacts and even his cabin.
- Elkhorn Ranch. This area of the park is the actual location of one of T.R.'s ranches in the badlands. None of the ranch buildings are still standing, but signs show their former location.
