This stone cottage in the woods, off a winding country road between Boone and Blowing Rock surprises newcomers with unusual dishes and sophisticated presentations. Signature game dishes include smoky grilled ostrich fillet, leg of Canadian elk, and hanging loin of buffalo with blue-cheese macaroni. Beef and pork dishes also available. Entrees are expensive for this area, some over $40. For those who don't eat meat, there's a vegetarian plate with delicious grilled vegetables. A nice way to end the meal is with espresso and a selection of freshly made sorbets. On weekends in high season, definitely make a reservation, and while there's no dress code, this isn't a place for grungy shorts and a T-shirt.
