Fred's General Mercantile Review
For hardware, firewood, a half gallon of milk, locally grown vegetables, pumpkins for Halloween, snowboard and ski rentals, gourmet bird seed, today's Wall Street Journal, and just about anything else you need, Fred's General Mercantile, half general store and half boutique, is the place to go in the Banner Elk and Beech Mountain areas, and has been for more than 30 years. It's at an elevation of 5,049 feet, making it the highest general store in the East.
