The Lion and the Rose

276 Montford Ave., Montford Park, Asheville, North Carolina, 28801, United States

One of the characters in Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel lived in this house, an 1898 Queen Anne–Georgian in the historic Montford Park area near downtown, and it couldn't have looked any better then than it does now. A special detail is a 6-foot Palladian-style stained-glass window at the top of the oak stairs. Innkeepers Jim and Linda Palmer keep the heirloom gardens and five guest rooms looking gorgeous. The landscaping around the house is striking. For snacks and wine, guests have 24-hour access to a well-stocked pantry. For the most privacy, choose the suite, which occupies the entire third floor.
