Wilmington
Getting Here and Around
Wilmington is at the crossroads of U.S. 17 and the Interstate 40 terminus. Commercial flights land at Wilmington International Airport. The downtown historic district along the riverfront is easily walkable and also offers a free trolley service. As you move away from this immediate area, however, a car becomes necessary for visits to places such as the Cameron Art Museum, Airlie Gardens, and the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. In summer and during rush hours year-round, the major thoroughfares are busy, so allow more time than the distance would indicate. Route 132 (College Road), the main north-south road through the city, continues south where Interstate 40 leaves off. U.S. 76/U.S. 17 (Market Street) runs from downtown east to the vicinity of Wrightsville Beach; U.S. 421 goes south to Carolina and Kure beaches.
