A nationally recognized collection of Native American artifacts fills the museum. Galleries display native art from across the United States as well as relics from the first inhabitants of Hatteras Island. The museum has been designated as a North Carolina Environmental Education Center. Several acres of nature trails wind through a maritime forest, a pavilion overlooks a salt marsh, and a bird observation room overlooks a garden with plants selected to attract birds. Beginning birding and archaeology summer programs are included in the ticket price, and admission tickets are valid for a full week.
