Fodor's Review

Trace the natural, cultural, and social history of the lower Cape Fear region from its beginnings to the present in the oldest continuously operating museum in North Carolina (founded 1898). The interactive Cape Fear Stories exhibit provides a chronological history of the region from early Native Americans to the 20th century. Kids get in touch with the area's enviroment by making sand dunes and feeding Venus Flytraps in the Michael Jordan Discovery Gallery. A fossilized skeleton of an ancient (1.5 million years old), giant (20 feet long, 6,000 pounds) sloth discovered in 1991 during the construction of a Wilmington retention pond is a great conversation starter and makes a great photo backdrop.
