Fodor's Review

Drive about an hour inland to see one of North Carolina's best preserved historic plantations. Located 52 mi west of Nags Head on Highway 64, Somerset Place once sat on 100,000 acres of land that bordered Lake Phelps and was one of the largest plantations in the state. The plantation produced rice, corn, oats, peas, beans, and flax, and its sophisticated sawmills handled thosands of feet of lumber from 1785 to 1865. The 800 slaves who resided here throughout the plantation's

80 years planted and harvested crops, cooked, and washed. Some slaves were also skilled laborers like carpenters, brick masons, cobblers, and weavers. The site has seven original 19th-century buildings and three others have been reconstructed including slave quarters. Tours of the builidngs and grounds last 90 minutes.
