This charming, waterfront, 19th-century-style inn is just steps from shops, restaurants, and Roanoke Island Festival Park. Individually decorated rooms sport clean, classic lines and muted colors; some have comfy sitting areas. Complimentary wine and cheese are served in the evening. The popular restaurant, 1587 ($$$$), is known for chop-house-style cuts and inventive entrées, such as braised pork osso bucco and grilled tuna over Asian udon noodles.

We chose the Tranquil House Inn because it was recommended by several travel guides. We were not disappointed. The Inn was wonderful. Our king room was nicely appointed. The location on Roanoke Island was convenient with easy access to all activities, shops & restaurants without being in the crowded beach scene. We stayed the week after Labor Day so the price very reasonable. I will stay there again when I visit the Outer Banks.
