Fodor's Review

A man-made millpond built in 1811 and ancient Lassiter Swamp combine to form one of the state's rarest ecosystems. Cypress and gum trees hung with Spanish moss reach out of the still, dark waters that are ideal for canoeing. Go fishing, hike 12 mi of trails, or rent a canoe or kayak to explore various paddling trails. Campsites and a public boat ramp are also available. Exhibits inside the visitor center highlight the pond's ecology. The park is on the mainland, 80 mi

northwest of Kitty Hawk.
