Just around the corner from Tryon Palace, owner Barbara Pappas has turned the three floors of a 1922 brick house into a tasteful, albeit eclectic, showcase for her collections. Breakfast is served on vintage dishes, books fill built-in shelves, art covers the walls, and a funky set of hats hangs on the second-floor landing. One bedroom has a brass bed that was reportedly not only saved from a brothel fire in 1897, but was also once owned by U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. Pappas, soft-spoken and genial, keeps a refrigerator stocked with drinks. Her popular mystery weekends (advance reservations a must) involve scavenging the town's nearby historic district for clues. Pros: innkeeper is knowledgeable about the local area and its history; off-street parking. Cons: located on a busy highway; innkeeper not always on-site; no pets allowed.
