A few exits from RDU International, the Umstead's modern design and wooded landscape make it feel light-years away from the traffic on I-40. The hotel, which opened in 2007, incorporates signature North Carolina elements, including paintings and oversized ceramic works by local artists, floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the 3-acre lake and towering long-leaf pine trees into the decor, and, at the hotel's bar, a by-the-glass wine list with more than two dozen offerings from North Carolina vineyards. Limestone and granite bathrooms, sumptuous beds with 330-count sheets, flat-screen plasma televisions with DVDs and CD players, and balconies with lake views heighten the sense of escape. Hotel guests can use the spa facilities or simply relax in a cabana by the vanishing-edge pool. Pros: luxurious hotel with restaurant, bar, and spa meets almost every traveler's needs. Cons: its location is convenient to the airport, but it's not within walking distance of downtown or attractions.
