Talk about the New South. Business executives and arts patrons make their way to Mert's—named for Myrtle, a favorite customer with a sunny disposition. Owners James and Renee Bezzelle serve large portions of Low Country and Gullah staples, such as fried chicken with greens, macaroni and cheese, and corn bread. Lowcountry specialties include shrimp-and-salmon omelets and red beans and rice. Buckwheat and sweet-potato pancakes draw a weekend brunch crowd.

Mert's Heart and Soul -- Formerly GA on Tryon -- is well known for it's southern-style homemade cornbread made from scratch. As far as entree's, I prefer the red beans and rice with smoked turkey sausage, and greens and mac and cheese as the sides. The restaurant is located on Charlotte's Longest-Running Daily City Tour by Queen City Tours and Travel.
