Oakwood Historic District

Oakwood Historic District Review

Several architectural styles—though the Victorian structures are especially notable—can be found in this tree-shaded 19th-century neighborhood. Brochures for self-guided walking tours of the area, which encompasses 20 blocks bordered by Person, Edenton, Franklin, and Watauga-Linden streets, are available at the Capital Area Visitor Services on Edenton Street. Adjacent to historic Oakwood is Oakwood Cemetery (701 Oakwood Ave., Downtown. 919/832-6077). Established in 1869, it's the resting place of 2,800 Confederate soldiers, Civil War generals, governors, and numerous U.S. senators. The grounds are carefully cultivated and feature willows, towering oaks, and crepe myrtles. The House of Memory next to the Confederate burial ground recalls North Carolinians' involvement in the U.S. military.
