Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site

Fodor's Review:

This historic site, about 22 mi east of Charlotte, is where America's first documented gold rush began, following Conrad Reed's discovery of a 17-pound nugget in 1799. Forty-minute guided underground tours of the gold mine are available, as well as seasonal gold panning, walking trails, and a stamp mill.

  • Cost: Free; Gold Panning $2
  • Open: Tues.-Sat. 9-5
