Fodor's Review

Town Creek Indian Mound Historic Site offers fascinating artifacts as well as a vivid reconstruction of a sacred site settled by the Pee Dee people more than 600 years ago. This glimpse into North Carolina’s pre-Columbian past is about 30 miles south of Asheboro. A self-guided tour takes you through reconstructions of santuaries, dwellings, and burial sites that belonged to the Pee Dee, a complex culture similar to other groups within the South Appalachian Mississippian tradition. These monumental earthen mounds were constructed for leaders, shamen, ceremonies, dwellings, and for the dead. Guided tours are available on weekends or by appointment.
