Southern Pines
The center of the Sandhills, Southern Pines is a good place to begin exploring the region. Perhaps because its golf resorts are out of town, this little spot has more of a homey feel than its bordering villages and generally attracts a more low-key crowd. The three-block Cameron Historical District, once the end of the line for the Raleigh Augusta Railroad, makes for a nice place to stroll. Shoppers will be tickled by the wide range of antiques stores and gift shops that line Carthage Street, while foodies will be pleased by the nice selection of restaurants.
