Bennett Place State Historic Site

Bennett Place State Historic Site Review

In April 1865 Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to U.S. General William T. Sherman in this house, 17 days after Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox. The two generals then set forth the terms for a "permanent peace" between the South and the North. Live historical events, held throughout the year, demonstrate how Civil War soldiers drilled, lived in camps, got their mail, and received medical care.
