Business executives and arts patrons make their way to Mert's—named for Myrtle, a favorite customer with a sunny disposition. Owners James and Renee Bezzelle serve large portions of lowcountry- and Gullah staples, such as fried chicken with greens, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, shrimp-and-salmon omelets, and red beans and rice. Buckwheat and sweet-potato pancakes draw a weekend brunch crowd.

Mert's Heart and Soul -- Formerly GA on Tryon -- is well known for it's southern-style homemade cornbread made from scratch. As far as entree's, I prefer the red beans and rice with smoked turkey sausage, and greens and mac and cheese as the sides. The restaurant is located on Charlotte's Longest-Running Daily City Tour by Queen City Tours and Travel.
