Greensboro Travel Guide

Sports and the Outdoors

Golf

Bryan Park & Golf Club. These two public courses, 6 miles north of Greensboro, have 36 holes of great golf. The Players Course, designed by Rees Jones in 1988, features 79 bunkers and 8 water hazards. Jones outdid himself on the lovely 1990 Champions Course, in which seven holes hug Lake Townsend. 6275 Bryan Park Rd., Browns Summit, NC, 27214. 336/375–2200. www.bryanpark.com. Champions Course, Mon.–Thurs. $36, Fri. $39, weekends $45; Players Course, Mon.–Thurs. $32, Fri. $35, weekends $40; $15 for golf cart. Players Course: 18 holes, 7057 yards, par 72; Champions Course: 18 holds, 7255 yards, par 72.

Grandover Resort & Conference Center. Greensboro's only resort hotel tempts you with 36 holes on the East and West courses, designed by golf architects David Graham and Gary Panks. Golf packages are available; the deluxe package includes dinner for two at the resort's Di Valletta Restaurant. The resort is parallel to Interstate 85, but it's set so deep into 1,500 acres that you'll never think about the traffic. 1000 Club Rd., Greensboro, NC, 27407. 336/294–1800 or 800/472–6301. www.grandoverresort.com. East Course: 18 holes, 7270 yards, par 72; West Course: 18 holes, 6800 yards, par 72.

Greensboro National Golf Club. The clubhouse is known for its hot dogs, so you know this course lacks the pretense of others in the area. Called "a golf course for guys who like golf courses," the Don and Mark Charles–designed public links features wide fairways, expansive greens, and layouts that are challenging without resorting to blind spots and other trickery. 330 Niblick Dr., Summerfield, NC, 27358. 336/342–1113. www.greensboronationalgolfclub.com. Weekdays $40, weekends $50; golf cart included. 18 holes, 6261 yards, par 72.

Tennis

Spencer Love Tennis Center. Located at Greensboro Jaycee Park, this tennis center features 13 outdoor clay courts. 3802 Jaycee Park Dr., Forest Lawn Dr. off Pisgah Church Rd., adjacent to Country Park, North Metro, Greensboro, NC, 27455. 336/545–5320. www.greensborotennis.com.
