A winding tree-lined road leads to this small college of liberal arts and sciences. The beautiful 540-acre campus encompasses two Hudson River estates, parklike grounds and gardens, and wooded areas. The free Center for Curatorial Studies (845/758-7598. Wed.-Sun. 1-5), on the south end of the Bard campus, is known for cutting-edge exhibits of contemporary art. Museum exhibitions take place in summer and fall; student shows are exhibited in spring. Artists Chuck Close, Joseph Kosuth, and Nam June Paik have participated in the cultural-studies center's public lectures and conferences, which focus on contemporary-art issues, including public policy. Noted architect Frank Gehry designed Bard's extraordinary Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts (845/758-7900. Tours $5). Brushed stainless-steel panels, draped like massive ribbons over the roof and sides of the 108,000-square-foot performing-arts center, reflect the light and colors of the sky as well as the hilly surroundings. Tours of the Fisher Center, on the north end of the campus, are given daily at 11, 1, and 2 most of the year.
