Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow

Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow Review

Built in 1685, this is the oldest church in New York State. It figures prominently in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving. Made of stone and hand-hewn lumber, the church is in a style typical of the northern Netherlands. Free tours of the church and cemetery are given Sunday at 2 from Memorial Day through October.

Surrounding the Old Dutch Church is the famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, which is mentioned in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and was the source of some of Irving's characters' names. The cemetery is open daily 8:30–4:30. 540 N. Broadway, Tarrytown. 914/631–0081.
