Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow

Fodor's Review:

Built in 1685, this is the oldest church in New York State. It figures prominently in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving. Made of stone and hand-hewn lumber, the church is in a style typical of the northern Netherlands. Surrounding the Old Dutch Church is the famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery (540 N. Broadway. 914/631-0081. www.sleepyhollowcemetery.org), which is mentioned in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and was the source of some of Irving's characters' names. The cemetery is open daily 8:30-4:30. Free tours of the church and cemetery are given Sunday at 2 from Memorial Day through October.

  • Cost: Free
  • Open: Memorial Day-Oct., weekends 2-4, Mon., Wed., and Thurs. 1-4
