If opulence can also be understated, it is exemplified at this inn and spa. The complex wraps around a water garden à la Monet. An arched wooden walkway and water lilies complement a waterfall that feeds three small ponds in the courtyard of Mirbeau, French for "reflected beauty." The châteaulike building contains the restaurant and guest rooms, all with fireplaces, French-country furnishings, down comforters, soaking tubs, and separate showers. The 10,000-square-foot Roman-style spa has the most extensive treatment menu in the region. On Saturday night the restaurant and bistro ($$$) host live jazz. The food is contemporary: radicchio-and-apricot salad with Parmesan cheese, truffle-scented wild-mushroom risotto, Hudson Valley duck breast with cherry sauce, braised lamb canapé over jalapeño polenta, and chocolate souffle with bourbon-pecan ice cream. Four- and five-course tasting menus are available. A shop called Boutique sells everything from negligees to candles to baby items.
