The huge gray building is across the street from Clift Park and Skaneateles Lake. You may book a boat ride, complete with captain, on the inn's 1946 wooden Chris-Craft. Interiors are traditional and tasteful. Guest rooms, individually decorated, have antiques and wireless Internet access; some have partial or full canopy beds. Some suites have whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. The restaurant serves seasonal American fare with contemporary touches, such as lamb with white-truffle risotto, roasted figs, and port-and-shallot demi-glace. An appetizer of seared scallops comes with braised leeks and a puree of sweet English peas folded into heavy cream. The inn's tavern, rustic compared with the country-elegant dining room and guest rooms, is perhaps the best place around to experience Old Skaneateles—"old" as in pre-1980, when the village was more of a cozy bedroom community for Syracuse than a vacation destination. Tavern-menu favorites include traditional pot roast and crab cakes with scallop mousse. Drinks are served from the 1807 inn's original bar.
