Hunter
Nestled in the shadow of Hunter Mountain, the second-highest mountain in the Catskills, the village of Hunter is all about the slopes. On winter weekends thousands of skiers flock to the area, the oldest of the Catskill ski resorts. Although it was once dominated by twentysomething rowdies from the New York metropolitan area—and still provides, along with nearby Tannersville (5 mi east), a raucous nightlife scene—Hunter is becoming more family oriented. In other seasons, fairs and special events (including a well-known Oktoberfest) are held here. The village's permanent arts scene, mostly the work of the not-for-profit Catskill Mountain Foundation (CMF), includes a gallery, movie theater, bookstore, and performing-arts center.
