Lake Placid

The village of Lake Placid isn't on Lake Placid; it's on the shore of Mirror Lake, one of the most beautiful of the Adirondack lakes. The village's namesake lake lies just north of the village. Because both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics were held here, Lake Placid is one of the best-known destinations in the Adirondacks. But it has been popular since the beginning of the 20th century, when the rich and famous first discovered the area and came here to participate in winter sports. A tight cluster of hotels, restaurants, and shops lines Main Street, where traffic often backs up, especially in summer.
